First I grabbed a hard cover book and my keychain ring. I placed the ring in the centre of the book. I then got my desk light and placed it so that it would cause the shadow to cast along the seam.
I then got my Canon 30D and Sigma lens 24-70mm f2.8 and set it to Aperture priority. Then I set the dSLR to ISO 250 and f5.6 to give a moderate shallow depth of field. I then took a couple shots at exposure ev±0 but found it was coming out too dark. I wanted to have a very sharp contrast from the white and the black shadow so I put the exposure to ev+1. I also followed the rule of 3rds.
I then uploaded the image into Aperture 2.0 software and increased the black levels, added sepia and vignette.
I then finally got the above result.
