Being A Minority In Korea

So Joe and I went to meet an old friend from university in Busan. We took the KTX for about 2 hours and met up with Erick. Here is a little info about Erick. Erick has been teaching English for about 5 yeas in Korea. When I was in school Erick needed a place to crash during the weekdays so that he could make it to his classes. He ended up staying at our place for almost 3 months and he lived in Joe's walk in closet. Erick use to wear the same shirt for a week and I don't even know how often he changed his underwear. At one point Erick had no job, no money, haven't a hair cut for months, no clean clothes and he was still dating 3 chick at one time! Needless to say, when I went to Busan I knew he would show me a good time.

So the first chance Erick and I got to talk, he mentioned that all the foreigners in Busan stick together like crazy and only go to a few bars along the strip. They dont try to assimilate whatso ever. In fact, in Toronto Erick had more Koran friends then in Korea. And for all those Canadians that get pissed about Asians not assimilating into the culture in Canada you should see how bad the Canadians are here. Erick is telling me that local people look at foreigners as monsters that just go crazy at the bars. Basically the foreigner's act like "Girls Gone Wild Spring Break" every weekend and just get shittered.

So both nights that Joe and I went out, we were the only Korean people in the bars (besides the staff) even the restaurants they chose were Pasta Houses and/or all you can eat Galbee. It was definitely a surreal sight too see. Long story short, don be an English teacher in Korea if you want to learn about Korean culture.

So here is pic of the house party Joe and I went to.

C'mon, Youn. Erick is making huge generalizations here. While the crew that we hang out with does tend to do as he said, it's not always like that. I have plenty of Korean friends and there are also lots of people who immerse themselves in Korean culture. Just because Erick doesn't do it, doesn't mean the other 17000 teachers don't make any effort either. /rant over.

true true. It just makes for better reading when I generalize. However I know that many English teacher assimilate well in Korea and speak better Korean then me so I will agree with your comment and say my post was misleading.
